mail() to large # of people, 50 people at a time

How can i send emails to say 3000 people using mail and and array as the list of recipients?

i have seen scripts that can send emails to 50 (or however many) people at a time until emails have been sent to all people. again, i will be using an array to contain all the email addresses.

I searched for examples of this but cant find any. any help is much appreciated!

This question came up just a day or so ago. From the manual:

Note: It is worth noting that the mail() function is not suitable for larger volumes of email in a loop. This function opens and closes an SMTP socket for each email, which is not very efficient.

For the sending of large amounts of email, see the PEAR::Mail, and PEAR::Mail_Queue packages.

i have no idea how to use PEAR. from what i have read it is already installed with php. does it include the mail packages or would those need to be installed. is there a beginner tutorial on using PEAR::MAIL?
