First off, let me say that this is probably a very easy question to answer, if you're someone who knows Linux well. I'm not.
Let me describe my setup. I'm running Fedora Core 2, with Plesk 7.5.4 Reloaded, PHP 4.3.11, and MySQL 4.0.25. I'd LIKE to upgrade to PHP5. It's not totally necessary, but it would make me and my clients very happy.
I attempted it once before, and let's just say it didn't turn out well. I won't go into a whole lot of detail, but both Plesk and PHP didn't work at all when I was done.
So, here's my question. If I follow PHP's installation instructions here, will it overwrite any other files? Ideally, what I'd like to do is just build a module that I could then add to the Apache config file, and switch back to PHP4 if anything goes wrong. I don't want to overwrite the old PHP4 files, or ANY files for that matter. So, if I just compile PHP in it's own, separate, folder, it'll just make the module and won't touch anything else, correct?
From what I know, this is true - but I want to be 100% sure of everything before I do ANYTHING. Last time was really bad, and now I'm paranoid. That's probably better than being carefree and screwing my system again.
Anyway, I appreciate any help you can give me.
