All done and installed. I can view the test apache configuration page.

one other thing, if i type in http://localhost/myfirst.php as this is in the htdocs directory on apache it says Bad Request

Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.

Turn off friendly HTTP error messages in IE.

To do this go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced.
Uncheck show friendly HTTP error messages.

In httpd.conf amend this ..

DirectoryIndex index.html index.html.var index.php

and check you have these (for port 80)

Listen 127.0.0.1:80

ServerName 127.0.0.1:80

Ok, i have amended the top bit in the conf file. Where do i look for the port settings? Obviously in the firewall somewhere. I have a belkin router with a firewall and the firewall is turned on my pc (xphome)

Above settings are to be found in httpd.conf .. search the file .. "Listen" & "ServerName"

Your firewall setting is quite a separate matter. (I use ZoneLab).

Use port monitoring utility like neomonitor ..

http://www.nycsoftware.com/neomonitor/

or portmon and procexpt from http://www.sysinternals.com

to monitor which ports / processes are running.

Apache should run as a service ..
look in Start > Control Panel > Administrative Service > Services

Ive installed neomonitor and got the localhost page ok.
i have put a file called today in the htdocs folder so the url should be http://localhost/today.php
the text in the file is <html>
<head>
<title>Today's Date</title>
</head>
<body>
<p>Today's Date (according to this web server) is <?php

echo( date("l, F dS Y.") ) ;?></p>

</body>
</html>
but i get Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.

Try this in today.php

echo 'today\'s date is - ';
echo date("l dS of F Y h:i:s A");

but before this .. does phpinfo.php work o.k. ?

I had the same problem. Newbie 7wks old.
You need to type this in the httpd.conf with a text editor
LoadModule php5_module "/php/php5apache2.dll"

NOTE:
With the path I have stated the php5apache2.dll file is in the php directory

/apache2/htmldocs/today.php
ip of pc 192.168.x.x

example
I use my other pc and type http://192.168.x.x:3306/today.php

The browser can now open the php file on the Apache Server (192.168.x.x)

No php info doesnt work. presumably i type in http://localhost/phpinfo.php
If so, i get bad request

I'm having the same problem. I'm brand new at all of this; I stumbled upon this post trying to figure out what I could possibly be doing wrong.

My question (and sorry if I'm hijacking your thread, but you said it could be closed^⁾ is:
If I'm only going to be accessing my server locally (it's just an install running via VMware), will I suffer any ill effects by going the CGI route?

If u install apache2 with php5 try to insalling as a CGI binary ...

You have to edit your php.ini file and make sure the following two lines are
uncommented:

extension=php_curl.dll

extension=php_openssl.dll

Then, restart your Apache server and everything should work fine after that.

chefsballs: you are downloading the php zip file and then putting php5apache2.dll into the sapi directory and then youy are deleting what ever is on line 953 and adding the following:

LoadModule php5_module c:/php/php5apache2.dll
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

I'm not sure, but this could help ... try giving "Full Control" permissions on the PHP folder and all of its subfolders... and test it.
