Masking output

I have a field which I want to mask the output. When I output the contents of this field, I only want to show the last four digits of the field and put an "X" or "*" for the other digits.

Can somebody point me in the right direction on how to get this accomplished?

although, just as an FYI, realize that different CCs have different patterns
