mp3 streaming using LAME to re-encode

I'm new to PHP and want to allow people to sample MP3 files on my site. I don't want to re-encode all my files and I know there is a way to use LAME to re-encode your files on the fly for streaming. Examples of this can be found in KPlaylist. I don't want to create a new file... just resample the file that already exsist when it is called on. I'm having a hard time finding information on how to make this work.

I'm using PHP4 w/ Apache 1.3 on a win32 system. I just want a small program that I can set the resample rate of the stream.

can someone please post an example of how this would work.

Have you thought about ShoutCast? I dont' know much about the PHP availability to do this, but ShoutCast can do it....

shoutcast in not a good choice for me for the on demand streaming.... for one you have to encode the file at whatever bitrate you want people to hear it at.
I use shoutcast now for a radiostation I have up and running.

Well, then unfortunately I'm out of ideas. I know you can execute a file on a local box with PHP, but I'm not sure how to do it, nor if you can do what you want with the exec() function.

on windows you can use the cmd

 $cmd = "cmd /C ".$lame_path." \"".$file_path."\" -  --mp3input --nohist --vbr_new --abr $max_bitrate ";

passthru($cmd)

the only problem is, that the apache cache is constantly growing..... and if the audioplayer(user) dont use a buffer: the stream is not a stream 😉
