Can anyone tell me which versions of apache,php and mysql do I have to download if I have windows 98se.

the latest versions will work fine. one of the best things about working with good software (open source) is you dont have to worry about incompatabilities with bad software (microsoft).

Linux is open source and getting the right rpm for the right distro can be a headache at times. Linux has alot of incompatabilities.

If you compare the different distros with the different versions of Windows you have the exact same issues in my opinion.

i use xampp for that purpose and it never failed me.( its updated quite often )
if you just started, then try it out. it saves you time-consuming configuration of apache, php and mysql and is "shipped" with several useful tools ( like phpmyadmin )

i dont use rpm's. in my opinion, you loose alot of the benifits of compiling your own software. i actually run gentoo, and though the os itself was failry complicated to setup, it has a great software installation system. no hassles, and complete control.

anyway... i dont want to start an os war here. these things tend to get out of hand hehe. linux isn't for everyone, and IMO, you should use what you are comfortable with.

The problem is that wamp 5 is not compatible with windows 98. So I will need to find an older version or try and download them separately. My laptop is almost 5 years old and until I get a new one (soon) I will have to work with the older versions because I need to practise while I'm studing it

Personally I've found that installing the components myself can be easier, at least if there are good instructions and you have some idea of what you're doing.

Apache webserver installer seems to work fine, but on win98 you might avoid Apache2 due to some incomplete support thing. For installing PHP on Windows the PHP Manual's instructions are invaluable, and I suggest that you install using the zip package, not the installer.

i already used xampp on a win98 machine ( friend has one ) - 2 weeks ago
it ran perfect ( although i was scared that it wouldnt )
