Need help displaying database...

I work for an environmental company that is making me develope an internal site that provides various functions... Since I am not really a coder I find it hard to perform such tasks (I am primarily a graphic artist)....

One of the things I need to do... is have a section that employees can go to to search our projects that we have performed....

the database will have various table headers that will include items like:

City
State
Project #
Project Name
Project Description
Date Started
Date Completed

and other similar items... all i really need is a front end for a web page that will allow the user to search the database for whatever string they would like and then have the results pulled from the dbase and then listed...

if they type nothing - then the whole database will be displayed.

I would like all the information to be displayed in tables.... if possible.

If anyone knows of some type of solution such as a script I can use or if there is any commerical options avaliable - I am willing to pay for a script...

This thread is a basic example of displaying data based on a database table.

Now all you have to do is add a form with a keyword field and write a query based on SQL comparisons like "LIKE", "RLIKE" or "REGEXP".

If you don't want to learn I suggest to hire a php coder instead of buying a script as the script may need to be tweaked to suit your needs and you may mess up security trying to tweak it yourself.

This is a very simple script however and I wouldn't pay a coder more than $100-$150 depending mainly on how much work it is with the layout.

And how about the data entry and edit scripts, integrity checking, backup and recovery procedures? All for $150?

Sure, if it was a job with a complete spec, existing (documented) database, and established site design - then 1 general purpose search and display script in a few hours: maybe $150 (cos you've already got script to adapt). But this ain't that, not at all.

Not even built yet. Guess who will end up spending hours waiting for coumn types, sizes, index names, etc.. Or end up building the thing just to get a move on? Let alone finding out what kind of searches really are needed and what results are expected.

As it is, you've given James an unrealistic expectation of the real work involved so he will not entertain an informed quote that refelects the true time and labour that will be involved in the end.
All he can expect to employ is someone who does not have enough experience to correctly assess a project. Someone who will not be able to meet a deadline because they have underestimated the job.

Roger, he asked specifically for a front-end, I quoted a price on that exact thing.

Obviously, if he wants more than what he asked for, including database design, a GUI/script system to insert information into the database and so on, well then that's outside of he asked for, and my quote won't cover that.

I don't know this person, I won't sit here and try to assume what he has done, has not done, what his friend can do or whatnot, all I can do is react on information at hand, which is a front-end with search capabilties and thus my quote stand.
