Writing programs using PHP?

I've heard of this, but how does one use PHP as a general programming language to write programs?

What exactly do you mean? You can use any text editor (notepad, dreamweaver, etc...) to write a PHP file. You just have to follow the syntax.

Sigh I could have sworn there was no possible way to explain it more simply... how do you use PHP as a general programming language (like C++) to create programs (Like firefox and MS Office and other programs that are made using programming languages). NOT how do I use programs to create PHP, NOT how do I use PHP to make PHP scripts.

Yes, I know that, and I've been through them all. And they didn't answer my question. I was hoping someone here could.

I have never used it, but from the few minutes I spent on the website, I gather this:

You install PHP-GTK.
You verify the install.
You create a script, or copy on published on the Code Snippet section.
Run the file from the CLI.

i.e. Win32
%systemroot%\path\to\php c:\path\to\phpfile.php

That's about all...
