Is it possible for a PHP script to load another site and check if there has been an update then get the updated information? For example if there was a webpage that had a word that changed every hour could you make a script that would check the page to see if there is a new word and send it to your database?

yes, it could do that...it would help if the word was demarked in some way like with xhtml markup..otherwise its probably looping thru the data and trying to match the words

If the server is providing a Last-Modified: header when serving the page then you can use that to decide if the page has been modified since you last checked.
