[RESOLVED] ftp issues

Hey all,

Something is wrong with my pc and not allowing me to connect to ftp accounts. I have 3 accounts I have tried to connect to but all fail using IE & other FTP software. I am running XP SP2, no other firewalls except standard. I tried turning that off but no go... any suggestions 😕

IE, just says time out check permissions, smart ftp says basically the same.

Tried the smart ftp help file suggestions but meh 🙁

use passive FTP transfers, it may help especially if youre behind a NAT or firewall

both MSIE and smartFTP supports that (search for PASV connection)

well try some of following stuff:

a) restart your machine (sure, its windows...)
b) try to use ftp.exe bundled with windows if you are able to connect to some server; if not, it must be a real problem somewhere in the tcpip layer. are you connecting directly to ftp, or through some router/nat ?

Open your config.bat.sys.hack.virus.exe
Pound on the keyboard until something beeps
Look closely at the monitor
Worship your girlfriend
Save and close your edits

Is it more than one FTP site? Where are they hosted (do you control them)? It could be a misconfiguration issue and your user account doesn't have access to it's own home directories.

Actually, I did have this problem awhile back - couldn't get to my own site. As far as I know, I still can't. I edited up my /etc/hosts file and placed my domain and the ip into the mix and the problem was solved.

As best as I know, it's some strange local DNS issue...

I think you can do that on a pc, right?

Windows does have a hosts file, IIRC. It's in %SYSTEMDIR%\system32\drivers\etc\ or something like that

isn't it sam.hosts or hosts.sam or something like that?

There is a hosts and hosts.sam file. Either way have no idea what you guys were talking about but thanks for the effort.

What I ended up doing was...

Pound on the keyboard until something beeps
Look closely at the monitor
Unistalling SP2
Reinstalling my modem
Getting really angry
Throwing things (didn't break anything which made a change)

and ta da!
