Direct to a login page

Hi,
I would like to know how to prevent a user from downloading a file if he simply types a file name at the browser (eg. http://www.abc.com/myfile.zip). If this happens, the browser would direct the user back to the login page and ask him to login first before he can process.

I would go about this using .htaccess files and making sure the referrer is coming from your site, rather than none or someone elses.
I'm not too good with the syntax of .htaccess, I only do it once in a blue moon, but there are some good tutorials out there if you google for it.
