Data Abstraction ?

I'm starting a large PHP application (re-writing an existing ERP system) and want to establish a really good framework. I've already decided to use SMARTY for templates...but that was an easy decision, because it's so popular. I'm sold on the idea of Data Abstration, but which approach should I implement? Has anyone heard/used Propel? The site looks interesting, but I'm not sure if it's going to catch on.

What are the most popular approaches out there for Data Objects/Data Abstraction?

You should check out PHP 5.1, it has a new feature called PDO (PHP Data Objects). It is they type of data abstraction you are looking for. If that doesn't work out for you, i'd check out ADODB.
