mysql_num_rows(): not a valid MySQL result resource?

i'm getting three unusual errors which i can't figure out how to correct-- or even necessarily what's causing them. (note: not that you'd 'count' the lines, but these numbers might not match the code below as i've done some editing in between when i started this post and now)

Wrong parameter count for mysql_result() in C:\Apache\Apache2\htdocs\wwwroot\Crowbar\web_app\sel_artists.php on line 126

Warning: mysql_num_rows(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in C:*\sel_artists.php on line 88

and

Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in C:*\sel_artists.php on line 128

i've tested portions of this script, trying to narrow it down, but all for naught.

depending on what i select, i do get different errors, and sometimes it seems to work , but i think this is too dependent upon chance matches and not logic and good app design, obviously. thanks again!

i can see the light on the horizon, however dim it may be!...
but, &%^$ do i feel burned out :xbones: at times on this thing! just when i feel like i'm getting ready to "clean up" and make all nice for presentation, i spend 4 hourse starting at 5 lines of code!! i figure someone out there can feel my pain! 😉

[man]mysql_result[/man] takes (at least) 2 arguments. you are only feeding it one.

the other two errors indicate that the result sets that you are feeding to [man]mysql_num_rows[/man] and [man]mysql_fetch_array[/man] are invalid which suggests that your queries are failing.

I think the problem is in your comparison statement...

//You have
if (mysql_num_rows($contres <1)) 

//I think it should be
if (mysql_num_rows($contres) < 1)

What you are doing is comparing $contres to 1, which isn't really possible because $contres is not a number, and then taking mysql_num_rows of a boolean value, which won't work either. It looks like just a simple parenthetical mistake... unless that operation works some other non-intuitive way.

As for the mysql_result problem, I can't see anything but I don't know much about mysql_result.

devine m, thanks for the tip about mysql_reslut('',0,'') . i had copied that (could you guess?!) from another script which was performing a similar function. i think i see now what it does, which is cool 'cause i learned something there, largely in thanks to you for pointing it out!!

and, krotkruton, thank you for pointing out my parenthetical mistake, AND for teaching me something about comparisons, booleans, and etc. This has all been a VERY good learning experience for me, and i have definitely grown in my abilities to both understand and create these scripts and functions. of course, i have a LONG way to go, but this has been fun, and i have enjoyed the challenge.

to all of the members of PHPBuilder.com, i can't thank you enough for your generous help! i appreciate your accurate reporting, your advice, your offerings of code and functions, and your constructive criticisims! i'm excited to get on to a new app--- AFTER i get this one working properly, of course. i'm sort of in the "clean up" mode now... going through every function of the app from a sort of "central control" html page where i'm linking to all of my php scripts. i assume this is "normal" practice in preparation for the true test of the app-- which i suppose will be to upload it and run it on the server, and just keep doing everything that i can to try to "break it".

is it in keeping with proper etiquette to, once ready, propose to the forum for the members to take a look at such apps for a "beta" test? where is a good place to ask for help if i want people to give my app a workout once it's ready? or do we not enjoy such a luxury, typically? hey, i'm new to this, so don't i get a handful of silly questions before you can call me as a numbskull? heehee.

devinemke, (or anyone else) could you offer any more insight as to what i should look for in terms of my queries failing (the mysql_num_rows error)?
