upload path not file

Hi There

I want to be able to have a browse button so the user can browse to a file,

when the user presses submit, I dont want the file uploaded, I just want the path to the file, I then can save the path in mysql,

Is this at all possible ? thanks for reading

not really, its not the behaviour of upload fields to do that, and also the path of the file is not exposed. you would have to use javascript to save the contents of the textbox into a hidden field.

While I haven't tried it myself, here's how I would go about it.

Have the typical upload form with a hidden field for the path
Allow the user to browse for their "file"
When the user clicks "submit", JavaScript kicks in
The JavaScript parses the path in the browse text field removing the filename
The output of #4 is then placed into the hidden field described in #1
On the following page, PHP takes that $_POST var with the path and puts it into MySQL

problem with that is that no browsers allow javascript to modify the contents of the upload field since this could easily be used to steal files from people.

Right, good catch. In that case, I think you can copy the value of the upload field into the hidden field. You can then manipulate the value in the hidden field.
