Removing PHPSESSID From URL

I have a website that uses sessions. However, the first hyperlink you click after initializing the session throws the following string onto the end of whatever URL you're going to:

http://www.site.net/index.php?PHPSESSID=5983f270532efd1278c7078d88beb29f

How do I disable this from happening? I think it's something to do with session cookies, but I'm not too sure.

Read the PHP Manual on Session Handling Functions, in particular the section on "Session configuration options".

Okay, so I found out that this can be disabled by turning off session.use_trans_sid. BUT, if the user doesn't support cookies, then the session will cease to function, am I correct?

If this is the case, then I'll live with it. My knowledge in sessions is somewhat limited, but I'm assuming the PHPSESSID is appended only once because session cookies take over after the next refresh.
