Hi there

I host my own website on a server at home, which is really just an old computer. The other day I was given another old computer, and I was going to use it instead of the other one as a main webserver, until I realised it was slower than the other one. At the moment I server everything on that one server including mail and mysql, and I also store all my private files on there too.

If I moved the mysql server and my private files onto this "new" old computer I have and put it completely behind a firewall keeping the server I have as the main webserver, would this have much benefit onto the security and speed?

You should use your faster machine as a web/database server or file server, and the slower one as your mail server.

Rather than run two slow computers, each one consuming electricity, why not just purchase one decent system and run everything on it?

Hardware is ridiculously cheap now that the extra you pay on electricity each month on running two computers, will pay for the faster computer in the long run.
