Mass mailing

I've got a script that allows to mail an attachment upon user's request. Now, I also have a number of users that opted in to receive this mailing on a monthly basis. Basically I need to run a cron job (my guess) and use the script that i have to email to the opted-in users.

I've never done that sort of things before. What's the best way of doing it? Shall I look it somehow? How would the script know who it already sent the file?

Please point me into the right direction if you know where to begin.

I've looked at other posts on the forum that have to do with mass mailings and realized that I should've prefaced my post by disclamer, however unverifiable it may seem, that I'm not working ona spam engine or anything of that sorts. It's a professional b2b service that we're working on. We do provide options for changing user preferences etc.

I also realized that running through the loop and sending one message at a time may not be a very good idea... We are ona dedicated server so we do not have restrictions on how many messages we can send out in a given time period. Also this mailing will be done once a month, still we would like to have a well written, properly optimized script...

Said that, still looking for good ideas.
