Converting dynamic php links containing numbers to one with keywords?

I am trying to figure out how to convert my php site links from this (example using golf clubs)

www.mysite.com/index2.php?item_id=10&

to

www.mysite.com/nike-golf-clubs.php <--(or .html)

I'm assuming I will need htaccess/mod_rewrite of some sort...still learning php.

I am sure there is a post in here somewhere but I am getting cross eyed! Any good tutorials?
