Php membership and automatic renewal

I am currently developing a website that offers a membership service for a fee on a monthly basis. I am using PHP, MySQL and a secured gateway to deliver payment and store the sites members.

My issue comes with the concept of automatic renewal. Where, if the option is selected, a member can choose to automatically renew their membership so at the end of every month it is automatically updated and charged to their credit card. Has anyone done anything similar to this or who could point me in the direction of a website that could give me some hint?

I guess if all else fails then I can fall back on a commercial script like aMember.

you'd need a cronjob to run every night to see if someone's expired, if so, extend the membership in the db, and run your purchase function ... unless your main problem is the actual charging of the card, because that I haven't worked with...
