Create Message Box

Hie people,
I wanted to create a message box like what we have here to post a thread. Maybe not as complex like this, but with the basic functionality like quote, bold, italics and also am thinking about font. Is there any article or websites to recommend me to get know where to get started?

I have created a text area and a submit button and that's it. I also have created a database and I know I need it to store the fonts and smileys(if possible). Any help? Thanks

It's being done on the client and not the server, so it's a job for Javascript, not PHP. But have a look at this FAQ because it's a source of confusion for many.
