want to stop protected MP3s before upload

Users of my MP3 upload site Busking Music are uploading protected MP3s that won't play. How can I identify protected MP3 files before they are uploaded (using PHP or even javascript)?

I'm looking for something like the following snippet using PHP:

if (!$binfile_type == "audio/mpeg-copy-protected") {
go ahead and upload
} else {
echo "<script>alert('Copy protected recordings are not allowed.')</script>";
exit;
}

AFAIK, you cannot check the mimetype of a file using javascript, so checking it before upload is impossible 🙁

However, you could check the mimetype after it was uploaded with mime_content_type() 🙂

Of course, you should keep in mind that the supplied MIME type might be bogus. If you want the server to be a bit more strict you could check its signature: substr($file,0,2) should be "\xff\xf0".

My web host is using PHP 4.3.11, says it does not recognize mime_content_type()

When I downloaded the MP3 to my harddrive, Windows Media Player pops up error stating that:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

So, maybe I have a different probem than I first thought.

Any info about "codec" would help so I could advise my users (but now I feel my thread is in the wrong category :bemused: )

I still believe that in spite of the Microsoft Media Player nag popup, the source of my problem is that users are uploading copy protected MP3 files.

If only I had a way of detecting copy protected files BEFORE the file is uploaded, I would not have to baby sit the site. You know, I would not have to test every uploaded MP3, and DELETE * FROM table WHERE id=??? all the time!

I think I still need a method where by I can determine if the MP3 file being uploaded is a "copy protected" file, or not. Would very much like to develop http://www.busking.org into a self-managed site.

I've seen the miracle code you guys have produced. I know you can supply me with the solution here!

I admit, I just don't have the required knowledge.
