goofy number behavior in calculations

not sure what to make of this -- i'm calculating totals via session variables for a shopping cart. all goes fine until it gets over $1000 - the next calculation rolls over back to 0 ??

Subtotal: $ 960.84
Shipping: $ 96.00
Total: $ 1,056.84

add in item for $59.99

Subtotal: $ 1,020.83
Shipping: $ 35.00
Total: $ 36.00

add another item for $59.99

Subtotal: $ 60.99
Shipping: $ 35.00
Total: $ 95.99

i've never seen this before.

do the numbers really have the commas in them when they are stored?
in that case, "1,000" + 5 = 6 in php. once it runs into the non-numeric digit, it stops going.

if thats the case, the session vars should be stored as pure numbers like 1023.45 and when displayed you can use number_format to add the commas.
