Just remember, nothing is truly free. Pay a small fee, like at vervehosting.com, and you've got a decent environment. Otherwise, put up with some ads and popups. Your only other option is WP's suggestion, of course, and then you give up accessing your site over the internet. However, if you are simply wanting to test and learn, then creating your own server on your local box is an excellent idea, since it's completely free, ad-free, and you have 100% control over your server settings (which is essential if you truly want to learn all the ins and outs of PHP/MySQL/Apache).

I absolutely LOVE the ease of use on this one.

However, from my experience the admin can be a total dumb crap and screw things up on occassion. If you are patient, they usually iron out the rough patches.

Yeah... plus, my admin is a lazy bastard that lounges around watching reality television instead of working on the host server.

my admin doesn't even understand what's going on most of the time......

Mine does. Mines a genius 😃

Haha good, then I'll start contacting you on MSN for help. I heard that it's the best way to get in touch with you.

I'm not sure about mine - he seems to think the server's a place for him to store all his pr0n....

                HA!

Really, Piers, what's the story with that anyway? Did you have a bad experience? 🙂

Yeah, someone wouldn't leave me alone on MSN... kept asking me questions about PHP. I don't mind random people starting to talk to me, but I'd rather they kept it social...

Plus, at http://www.eurodns.com/ you can get FREE .be domains (at least for the first year). No cc or anything needed...I just snapped up a bunch of stupid domains for future possible junk.

What about advertising 😕 it sounds too good to be true, like people using common sense and google 🙁
