my friends, and messaging system

I need to build a system for users to be able to message each other and each other to a buddies list. It obviously needs some kind of authorize friend etc.

Any Ideas on where to find a tutorial or something ?

where registered users can dend messages to eachother?

It is these functions:

1. Register users in a file (can be directly in plain textfile or using database to save in database file)

2. User login. With mathnig against users in your register

3. Present user with a form to send text to another user.
   This message is stored in file (plain or database)

4. If user has got a message, give chance to read message and reply.

5. User logout.

There are a few PHP PM systems out there for free download.
Special dedicated standalone message systems.
But 9 out of 10 PM systems comes bundled within a Forum, Bulletin board.

Easist way to setup what you want, would be downloading a forum
with user registering and PM-system.
There are several 100 of different forums to chose from!

'My Friends' or 'My Buddies'

When there are many users at a site ( I do not know how many will join your website .... )
you can chose to put special friends on a list.

If you download a good free forum software
you will get both PM-system and with a My Friends function.
So what I would recommend to you is get a good free forum download
install it and you have what you want ( along with a bulleting board, of course )

To start writing your own application
would be like inventing the wheel that has been made 100reds of times before.
not even an experienced PHP writer would go into this.
There are several security issues with letting people
be able to post stuff at your website.
A serious bulletin board or forums software has acceptable security.

Go search for a good free open source bulletin board download.
This is what you need.
There are plenty to chose from.

Ok thanks for that, annoyingly what im building is kind on unique but I will keep looking out for forums.
