Variable in required page??

Lets say you have page1.php that has this code.


  function Layout($content) {

require("http://www.yousite.php/layout.php");

  } 

  $ContentforDisplaying = "Hello World";

  Layout($ContentforDisplaying);

Then on the layout.php page you have all the normal HTML code but where you want the content to show up you have this code


  <?php echo $content; ?>

How can you get it to actually display the value of the variable? I currently have this code and this problem and I do not know how to get it to work. Thanks.

Your problem is that you are requiring a file through http therefore the required file is served to your script. As it is served it runs through php before being inserted in line. layout.php will resolve to nothing when parsed on its own.

To get this to work you need to require it directly:

require("/layout.php");

Note if your page1.php is not in the same directory as layout.php you will need to make the link relative.

Thanks, however if I do that it gives me this errors:

Fatal error: layout(): Failed opening required '/layout.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/josh/public_html/bb/common.php on line 43

Also, how do I make the link relative? Thanks.

This is not relative reference, and it will evaluate to "layout.php" in "home_base_dir" since the first "/" actually means "root". You should try something like "./layout.php" which is relative, as the "." means "current directory" or just plain "layout.php" if the 2 files are in the same directory.

The Fatal error you receive is because you're trying to access a dir where the script doesn't have privilige access their.
