Building linked list from directory

I am really surprised that after hours of searching, I have found no one who is in need of this issue.

Here's what I have:

Win 2k server running IIS, FTP, PHP5, Mysql 4.1

I am running an internal website. I want to generate a page that searches through a particular folder, when the page is called, take the filenames and build a list to display, generate a link to the file, and it would be nice to be able to grab an identifier from the file, but is not necessary.

Surely there is a way to perform this function. Ultimately, it would be really great if the page could run through the files, display them, add them to a database with the link.

I'm not sure if this was the correct forum, so if it isn't, I apologize.

Have a look at opendir(), and readdir().

$fsdir = '/path/to/dir' // the path to the directory containing the files you want to list, relative to the root of the filesystem

$dir_relative_to_webroot = '/path/to/dir' // the path to the directory containing the files you want to list relative to the root of the web site

// grab a handle to the directory containing the files we want to list
$dirhandle = opendir($fsdir);

// loop through each filename within that directory
while (FALSE !== ($file = readdir($dirhandle))) {
  // you know the path to the directory relative to the root dir of your site
  // you know the filename
  $linkhtml = <<<LINK
<a href="$dir_relative_to_webroot/$file">$dir_relative_to_webroot/$file</a>
LINK;
  print $linkhtml;
}

You may want to add a check within the loop for is_file() in case the directory could contain subdirectories.

If you want to read some info from the file try looking at fopen or some of the other file related functions.

one more stupid question, got the code to work, but how do I work with filenames? For instance, trying to keep everything bu the .pdf's from displaying.

I assume that:

if ($file<>'*.pdf') {

}

will not function as it will be looking for the filename "*.pdf", correct?

Correct; have a look at using [man]substr[/man] to see if the last four characters are ".pdf". You might want to strtolower() the substring before testing it in case some filenames end with ".PDF".
