apache's mod_rewrite systemt

All,
I saw in a recent post that apache's mod_rewrite systemt acutally tricks the user into thinking that they have their own subdomain. Can anyone give me an example on how this function works. Is this a safer way to protect a user's information then by doing the viewpage.php?id=22. Thanks for your help.

If a site is hosted externally what are the chances that I will be able to do this?

AddModule mod_rewrite.c

and delete this mark # this frist ..

and restart apache

or found this

AccessFileName .htaccess

and delete this mark # this frist ..

and chacke AllowOverride

to edit

AllowOverride None

AllowOverride All

Thanks, When I would do that how would I actually change the URL then. If I had a URL like http://www.site.com/blog/person.php?Id=12345 to something like http://blog.site.com/12345 to make them think they have a subdomain and increasing my site's security at the same time.

This isn't a PHP problem; mod_rewrite is part of the Apache server, (with documentation here and here). By limiting your questions about mod_rewrite to PHP forums you're missing out on resources devoted to mod_rewrite.
