Still in the early stages of development, but I've made a web forum which uses AJAX techniques.

Mostly works fairly well, very much lacking in features however.

(Note to mods: I'm not advertising this for general use)

Tell me what you think. I'm using PHP 5.1.0RC4 and sqlite. I'm using PHP's XML features too.

This is an early prototype. Various additional functions need to be implemented, including (as you rightly noticed), some sort of paging system for the posts and threads.

People - please bear in mind that this is hosted on my dev box, which is not perpetually turned on.

The reason you couldn't get to it, was that the machine was down. I've now turned it back on, but it won't be there forever 🙂

Very nice work Mark! I've always wanted to make my own forum but I didn't know how it would take. How much time did it take to plan/develop this basic forum?

This forum uses Ajax. I guess there's a couple of days of work there, on and off. The tricky bit was working out what method to use for the Ajax client/server communication and document building.

Actually making a forum in conventional PHP is not too difficult. You'd want to make sure that you use a templating system such as Smarty though. Don't go down the PHPBB route and use your own crap templates, or write PHP and HTML mixed up.

The other strange thing is that this line comes up as a url to 'about:blank':

Hmm, it appears that the Javascript string.replace(regexp, func) does not work the same in Safari as I expected.

This is not a big deal, as I'm planning on changing the way the templating works anyway, so it will no longer rely on this.

Mark, works great in Safari now. I'm curious how this will do with a large database. Right now, it's spectactularly fast. Also, do you have a plan to allow people to bookmark to particular threads?
