Hi,
Looking to read a barcode via a USB or other barcode device and have the data fed into a MySQL database. Firstly, can this be done and, if so, any ideas how? Thanks!

Yes. It definitely can be done.

In the long-ago past I did some work with barcode scanners, and there were two types at that point.

One type used a com port and needed driver software. The client application then had to call functions on the driver in order to read from the barcode scanner.

The other type "chained" between the keyboard and the PC. Any input from the barcode appeared to the application just as if it was typed at the keyboard and could be read as normal.

I don't understand you. Are you now saying that you don't want to use a bar code scanner?

Yes i need bar code scanner but i have no idea to use it i need help in scripting to doing this work.

Do you have any details about the barcode scanner you will be using? Does it require driver software, or does it work on stdin?

Yes i have a device for reading barcode using usb port ofcouse it use a driver to install on window i don't know how can call this device functionality in PHP pages????

What does your manual say? No one here knows anything about your barcode scanner. You haven't even told us the brand name and model number, or even the operating system you are running on. If your scanner has an API, we can help you out, but you're starting on the from point.

Before you ask "how can I use PHP to read from my barcode scanner?", you first need to answer the question "what facilities does my barcode scanner provide to allow other systems to use it?" The manufaturer of your scanner should be able to answer that. When you have the answer, we may be able to help you write the appropriate code in PHP.

Just out of interest, why have you decided that PHP is the language to use?

Have you contacted Genovation to ask them how to develop for your scanner? There doesn't seem to be any information on their site for this. I've had a quick look at the website, but I don't intend phoning their technical support team for you.

You need to explain to them that you intend to write an application which will use their barcode scanner and ask them what facilities they provide in order to do that. Do they provide an Application Programming Interface, for example? If they do, they need to give you documentation on how to call the API.
