exec() function

Hi all,

I have problem by using exec() function in PHP5, Apache and Windows XP to run an external program from my PHP page reside on server. When I call my program using exec() the page just stops (waiting for www.mysite.com...). I have used by absolute path and result was same. Also, I have tested my PHP page by running by using PHP (or PHP-cgi) interpreter in command line and it just works fine without any problem. I don't know why it doesn't work when I call it from my page. Can anybody help ? I think it is something wrong with Apache or PHP settings. Am I right ?

Could you post that code?
You might need to use include() instead of exec().

exec() was originally developed for command line operations. It is most likely waiting for a response from the application.

For instance, I use exec() to parse various server information from uptime (a linux command). The command spits back a string of text then returns exec() to the default command line. Exec then knows the application has completed running and returns those results as a variable. I believe it is possible to have exec not wait, or suppress it by using @(). I've never used exec in a windows environment so it could be different - but I doubt it.

Well, I am not sure if the problem is because the executed program is waiting, because just for test, I called a simple program which shows a message box and it still waits. Also, when I run my php code by calling PHP or PHP-cgi interpreters it works fine and the program calls by exec() successfully !!!

Hello everybody !

Wanna say that I got exactly the same problem as Danesh_D with the PHP5 delivered with WAMP. I try to launch OpenOffice but in vain...

( I just saw that Hagen00 responded to me... And haven't tried yet its solution. )

The same code with the sames authorization in PHP.ini works fine on PHP4.3 with easyPHP
and of course without any PHP...

I have to try with an separate install of PHP5, Apache, mySQL, etc... And I will go back here to tell what is new : ++

Hi again !

After some tests , I saw that the problem seems to come from my Apache Configuration.

In fact, when i ask PHP to launch OpenOffice with the command exec(), it is doing it.
Whatever I am using PHP4 or PHP5 ( With the Wamp Server you cand find here :
http://www.wampserver.com ) , the results are the sames.

Process "sOffice.bin" and "sOffice.exe" are launched and my WebPage keeps as blocked as them ( It is for running a convert-macro of openOffice wich runs fine when OO is launched in local )

In the same time, if I try to kill Apache, it becomes only possible if I have killed "sOffice.exe" and "sOffice.bin" before...

Well, I have to try again with easyPHP and to see if the difference is really coming from WAMP' Apache. I would prefer to solve this, because WAMP uses PHP5 and I need it to perform a good job with XML without have to use a lot of externals modules...
