Can not open url to read its contents!

I can't open the following url to read its contents. It says "Could not open URL" . But I can open it directly from the browser. Can you help me? Below is the code.

Well, I don't believe you wrote this code. Otherwise, you would have noticed that the echo "Could not open URL"; is what you are viewing AND NOT giving you better details about the fopen call. Remove the error message suppressor thingy (@) from fopen and then post the real error message (which is probably just that your administrator have turn off allow_url_fopen.)

I thought the warning message was not important. What is important is it can't open the url.

I removed the suppressor so code is below

Now it says

Looks like I was mislead, the actual URL appears to be http://box.az/cgi-bin/forgot?action=checkuser&userid=shamil afterall. My apologies.

Come to think of it. I had this problem before. I wrote this function ( I think I did 😃 ) instead and it worked for me...

I copied and paste the function and called it

now it returns

Well, this seems to be a problem with your host. That, or box.az rejects connection attempts based on user-agents (or lack thereof.) To make sure, try using like 'http://www.google.com' or another other FQDN to see if you get a response. If you get data from other sites, try tweaking my function by changing

$send = "GET $path HTTP/1.0\r\nHost: $host\r\n\r\n";

to

$send = "GET $path HTTP/1.0\r\nHost: $host\r\nUser-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US)\r\n\r\n";

I am not able to get data from google too. It represents the same error. I am working right now at university on my computer which is coonnected to a domain with all others. Is this will generate the problem? If so, what can I do to make it work. It is important for me.

I don't think that your computer being on the same LAN segment with others qualifies a problem. However, your network administrator may have tighter restrictions as a result.

I now assume the reason you get to the page via browser but not via PHP has to do with proxy server. In other words, to keep a tight grip on your school computers, you r network admin probably has your browsers configured to use an inhouse proxy server and then blocks access to port 80 out of your LAN. If that's the case, you might try and figure out how to send these requests through the same proxy server. Since I'm making an assumption here, I can't really help you further.

Thanks bretticus. If that is the problem I think it will not be solved unless I locate my php code in other host. Do you know any of them i can use free for a limited time? Or I have to spend more time to find a way to use port 80.
