How would you make PHP scripts run faster? PHP accelerators like Zend? Are there any good FREE ones?

eAccelerator works great for me, makes my server a lot faster, but slows down the first time a page is loaded after a restart of the server.
Zend Optimizer is free unless you're antsy about registering it.
