Resize image before upload

I want to make a webpage where ppl can upload images.
Now the problem comes when ppl upload images straight from the cam.
Images of 2MB are not rare then.

Now I was a while ago surfing on 2dehands.be and I noticed that when
I browse to an image that it imediate makes a thumb of before I actually clicked submit to post the images.

Now I think maybe this is something on client side?
How can I make something like that?

That it resizes the image before it is actually uploaded?
This way when someone choses an image of 2MB it won't take that long to upload the 2MB file but instead an image of 300kb

definately something client side, so its not a php question. maybe an activeX component or something, but ive gotta say, ive never heard of such a tool.

I have found a link where it previews it.
But I don't know if I can post that image then to the server.

that doesn't change the actual image size, only the preview size. and like i said, this is not a php issue.

No I know but maybe you guys also had such a problem and could bypass the prob with some script.

I think that good developers here also could use such a thing

im telling you. you will need to google for an activeX object of some desciption. though i really dont think this is entirely possible.

There are inexpensive java applets that can do this quite easily. Rad Upload, Thin Image Upload are examples.
