EREG - Prevent spaces allowed in field

im trying to figure out the ereg command required to STOP users regiserting their details which contain SPACES

Eg. Username = "John Smith 123"

I want to allow them to enter uppercase letters, lowercase letter and number only.

Any other characters such as ,./@#&*_ etc, (as well as SPACES) are not allowed.

therefore int he above example it should force them to enter things such as:
"JohnSmith123" or "johnsmith123" or "john12" or "JOhn123sMith" etc

thx for your help, you'll be pleased to know you fixed my problem

i changed your code slightly to coincide with some other ereg checks i had

		if (!ereg('/^[a-zA-Z0-9]+$/', $newname))
		{
			unset($_GET['do']);
			$message_new="$newname - is not a valid User Name
							Please try again.";
			include("login_form.php");
			exit();
		}
