Long query, need to break..

This is just driving me nuts! I am going to have a long mysql query and would like to break the line so I can read it better. I have tried combinations of quotes, single quotes, and peiods to join the line breaks but with no luck.

Example:

$query = "UPDATE alumni SET alum_address ='$alum_address', alum_cohort_year='$alum_cohort_year' WHERE username='$temp_user' and password=SHA1('$temp_pass')";

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

This should work ok -

$query = "UPDATE alumni 
SET alum_address ='$alum_address', 
alum_cohort_year='$alum_cohort_year' 
WHERE username='$temp_user' 
and  password=SHA1('$temp_pass')";

I like splitting my SQL like this.

$query = "UPDATE alumni
SET alum_address = '$alum_address', alum_cohort_year = '$alum_cohort_year'
WHERE (username = '$temp_user')
AND (password = SHA1('$temp_pass'))";
