i don't understand why im getting these syntax errors

index column is varchar(100)

Maybe because you're using update syntax for an insert?

insert into tablename
(field1, field2, field3)
values
('string',32,'anotherstring');

index is a reserved word in Mysql
if is a reserved word in Mysql

Choose some other names for those columns

reserved words was the problem. i changed the column names and the queries now work thank you.

So you can use update syntax in an insert in MySQL? Bad habit to get into, if you ever want to use anything else I'd say, or get help from non-mysql folks.

I'd like the "update" syntax better for typical inserts - would make it easier to pair field names and values. But not for other types of inserts (like 'insert(a,b,c) select (a,b,c) from x'). But, yeah, best to try to stick to standards.

Yeah, I'd actually prefer that the insert syntax be supported by updates than the other way around, given a choice. That's because I like using implode(",",array_keys()) and array_values()...
