what are openssl_xxx() functions for?

Hi all,

My web host has openssl installed and enabled. Can I use php functions like openssl_xxx() to handle the SSL stuff? I'm new to SSL. Is there any instructions/tutorial out there about using those fucntions? Are they actually used to generate key/encrypt code?
