font color, php, and w3c compliance

Today I wen't through my main page with the w3c validator and I fixed all 100+ issues that came up. The thing is this, one of the issues was an invalid dtd type. When listed as php(w3c gives error) the page looked the way i expected with green3 text being rather bright. But if I change the dtd type to html(which fixes w3c compliance) suddenly all text marked green3 disappears. Has anyone else noticed anything like this and if so what am I doing wrong? As of now I'm using lightgreen(not my first choice but better than darkgreen) and I'd like to have it looking the way I originally planned.
Additionally, I did take the time to try and find a php dtd but couldn't, my guess is since php occurs before html output it's not needed, but the examples in my book show one(but it creates w3c errors).

there is no such thing as a php dtd, and yes, it is because you use php to output html, so you should atleast use a html dtd, though i would be more inclined to aim for at least xhtml transitional.

also your problem with green3 stems from there being no such color in the html specification. ive never used named colors and would always atleast recommend using there hex value, though once again, i would recommend using css over anything inline, and well, yeah, if your going to do that your best (once again) aiming for atleast xhtml tranistional.

your page might be validating now, but really, html loose is, well, a very loose standard to aim for.
