embedding an if statement inside a print

What would be the alternative way of doing this?

I'm trying to auto-select the value that was entered in the previous page... The add function is a custom function for printing fields...

don't embed it. echo the part up to the conditional, do the the conditional, then echo the rest.

Well, it would be easier if the code were cleaner to begin with, but

print ("<td bgcolor=\"white\">".add('<select name="co_aut'.$i.'_country">
<option value="" '. ($_SESSION['POST_VARS']['Country'] == "" ? " selected":"").'>- Select a Country -</option></select>')."</td>");

seems to be the closest in spirit to how you're writing it.
