numbering results

Hello…

I would like to know how to display the entry number for each result of a query. For example a query has a limit of 5 results and produces the following

Blue
Red
Green
Purple
Yellow

I would like it to display a number next to the result.

1. Blue
2. Red
3. Green
4. Purple
5. Yellow
