problems installing/implementing php

i'm trying to set up php on my laptop at the moment.
i have it located in e:\program files\php\
i've configured my webserver to point to the said location for php and php3 extentions. when i try to load the page however, it is not interpreting corrctly. for example, the following code is outputting (part of) the 404 page when i request an existing page:

first i set $page = Home;
Home.php does exist, and is in the same relative directory.
on my live server (pyrofreak.com) the code loads things correctly. however on the local install it is not. also the case with other sites i have downloaded from my live server. any ideas? thank you.

which server are you using? where is your php.ini and how is the path identified?

i am trying to use "NetServe Web Server"
php.ini is located at "E:\program files\php\php.ini" (data stick, so i can take my code to multiple systems and test)
there are no paths in the php.ini which are not commented out. which path are we talking about?

not familiar with netserve, however your php.ini file should be included in your environment path path=c:/program files/php;

Does a phpinfo() respond?

well, the reason i am using this webserver is i am trying to find one i can just run from my USB drive which supports PHP. anyone have other suggestions of tried and proven servers?

phpinfo() does not respond. it actually shows the <?php phpinfo(); ?> in the source code when i view source. hmm?

also i set the path to php under the environment variables path setting.

apache, iis, sambar work fine with php on windows... you just need to follow the installation instructions properly... 🙂

If you're looking for a webserver that can run from a USB drive, try this: PortableWebAp

It comes with: PHP 5.1, mySQL and all... it's really good, and perfect for what you seem to want to do with it...

thanks a ton, i'm about to try this out and will leave my review =) i see your name everywhere...

for any others reading, this is now a commercial app that is $10 and no longer has MySQL included, but rather SQLite 3.x. however, i found the most recent release which was freeware (and MySQL) at the link below.

so far it is working great (displays and processes the php code). looking at the mysql and about to test it. will comment soon enough.

well it works great for on the desktop system, but the application wont run on my laptop at all. it starts to load but never does. i tried to run it 5 times, even rebooting a few times while trying. any ideas?

hmm... portable webap is supposed to run.... not sure... did you mess with the settings or anything?

nope nope... i downloaded and extracted on my thumb and it worked fine on the desktop system. i plugged it up to the laptop and it just kept loading for 30 minutes. so i tried to extract on the laptop and it still didnt work. something creepy. aside from that though, i decided to scrap the idea and just port the code around and point the home directory to the thumb after installing a local webserver and php... now my issue is that i'm getting the error "Fatal error: Call to undefined funtion mysql_connect() in H:\dev\www\friendsvr\dbconn.php on line 6" which is

mysql_connect('localhost','data','data');

last i recalled, this was fine... so anyhow, my pages wont load beyond this point. I am not sure if i had php installed on the laptop right in the past though, so ill give that another whack in the morning. thanks for the help =)

Is your PHP.ini file correct? That error usually comes when PHP can't load the mySQL extension...

And PortableWebAp requires Admin priveleges on the system to run (I think)...
