Has anyone ever made a screensaver?

It would be fun to make a family screen saver for my relatives this Christmas/Chanukah season. Does anyone have any experience? If so, could you recommend the software that might be able to help me do this? I googled it of course but came up with so many results that I don't know which program of them all is a good one...

well i made one along time ago in Vb6,

i think you just need a win32 exe and change the extension to .SCR or somthing.

so if you can code in basic just use the opensource package freeBasicfixed

or i think you can compile win32 exe's with flash/director not sure though

i've built several in Macromedia Director - and it needs a plugin as well - cant remember what it's called - works well, but if you dont use Director its not so quick to learn

if it's something simple like a bunch of pics and a soundtrack, then irfanview http://www.irfanview.com is a cool little image viewer/convertor which does slideshows that can be saved as screensavers, .exe files etc.
and it's free.

im pretty sure ive made one using flash a long while ago. cant remember if it needed a plugin or not, but i remember it was pretty easy.

Thanks for all the replies. I was hoping to convert a .swf file into a screensaver, but I think a plugin/extension is required. Either that, or I can't figure out how to do it with my version of FLASH.

I may look into rikmoncur's suggestion, as my idea is really just an array of family pics. Hadn't thought about adding sound, but that sounds like a great idea.

I will also recommend IrfanView as it is a feb hundred KB utility and does hell lot of things nicely with a very low memory footprint 🙂

heh my bad about the link... umm a visual language? im not sure what you mean by that...but yeh it deffinitly is since you can easily make games in it.. providing you know basic and logic.

also im sure you can do it with any programing lang and a win32 compiler.

visual studio vc++? .... (but hell i hate visual studio..)

freebasic would be best choice for flexibility i mean you literaly do anything whereas the above mentioned infranview only does slideshow's.

EDIT: and since basic is such an easy language to learn just find a some tutorials and u'll be away... 😉
