Automated "This Day In History"

Basically, what I want to do is a "This day in History" type thing.

I've got all the data, I want to be able to call it up on each day (or if nothing important happened, have "Nothing happened"), and do all of this via php. ("ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, ________________.")

I'll be honest. I don't even know what this would be called, otherwise I would have searched for it and/or found help and/or given the topic a better title.

So my question is... what would this be called, and how do I do it? Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

easy enough. just store your data for each day in one field and the date in another. then simply run a query looking for the data for todays date. eg;

$result = mysql_query("SELECT data FROM tbl WHERE stamp = '".date('Y-m-d')."'");
if ($result) {
    if (mysql_num_rows($result)) {
        $row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result);
        echo "On this day in history {$row['data']} happened";
    } else {
        echo "Nothing happened today in history";
    }
}

Although of course, you probably don't actually care if the year is current, just if the month and day match.
