Dotster Dishonesty?

On December 9, I received email from dotster.com (this is common, of course) telling me that a domain was due to expire in January. It listed "AUTO-RENEW" as being "ON".

This morning, I received an email which appears identical in all respects, save one: "AUTO-RENEW" is marked as "OFF".

I've not visited the site to make ANY changes to my "configuration", as it were.

So, if I didn't read my mail (and sometimes I skip stuff, y'know), I might have lost a domain or two.

Anybody else use them, notice an issue like this, etc?

I use them for my naramore.net -> which included naramore.info for free (uh, thanks but no thanks guys). This expired 12/18/05.

Anywho, I got emails on 10/28, 11/4, 12/9, 12/16, 12/18, and 12/21 - and they all had the auto-renew set to "OFF" .. no changing on my end, or theirs, apparently.

Are you sure you read it right?

Well, yeah:

.... OTOH, it occurs to me that it could be that the credit card they have on record is one that is no longer valid, in which case I guess we'd have to give them kudos for figuring that out (and turning "auto-renew" off), but it might have been nice if they'd mentioned it previously.

Maybe they did ... I'll have to sort through a mass of email to check.... :rolleyes:

Personally, I use NetworkSolutions as my domain registrar as it gives me better control over my domain (and who actually owns it). But your logical explanation (the invalid CC number) seems to explain it. Although you would think you'd have gotten an email saying: "Your credit cared didn't go through, please give us another". I guess they don't want your busines... lol....

NetSol has a couple of problems, at least from my POV: Price is too high, and their service (via telephone, anyway) absolutely sUKZ0rZ ... and did I mention the price?

I've a couple of domains we manage that are registered there, and I generally recommend a transfer away if feasible. Of course, they do their best to make sure it isn't. To each his own.

We do use NetSol for "mission critical" domains, but my personal name I just used dotster for. We've used NetSol since '97 and had no problems with them (save the price 😉 )
