Parent/Child Categories

Hi;

I searched the forums first for what I need, but either I was searching wrongly or was too blind to see what I need!
So here it is:

I have to create a news system that has main categories and subcategories , MAYBE sub-sub categories but probably not.

I do have a table with foloowing fields:

CatID, CatName, CatContent

I'm not sure how to go around the subcats efficiently.
Some people suggested in other posts, to have a new filed like CatParent.
So if it's a main cat the CatParent=0, if it's a subcat then CatParent=1 or 2 or whatever the parent category is.

But would that help me with sub-sub cats too?

Also, I'm not too sure how to retrive the info in relative format?



Any ideas?

Well, if I were you, I'd split it up into different tables:

Categories
[indent]id (int)
catName (text)[/indent]

SubCats
[indent]id (int)
parentID (int)
subcatName (text)[/indent]

SubSubCats
[indent]id (int)
parentID (int)
subsubcatName (text)[/indent]

News
[indent]id (int)
cat (int)
subcat (int)
subsubcat (int)
newsTitle (text)[/indent]

Then, you just do a simple join on the three tables and then run a query selecting only the items you want....
