I know this has been done before but not in a while, and never with such a catchy title 😉

Seeing a little snipped of dale's desktop in this thread got me interested. What machines are people doing their work from (not the servers your desktop/laptop) and what does it look like (screen shots, photos whatever).

Here's mine.

I'm on a DELL Latitude D810 2Ghz processor, 1Gb of RAM and an 80Gb hard disk. It's got a nice big screen with a really high resolution which is cool for films and stuff but text can be a little hard to read in some places.

I'm running Kubuntu Breezy Badger (Linux), desktop manager is KDE (obviously).

It is an A grade P.O.S. 😃 but it is only needed for typing code, playing UT & GTA2 so yeah!

I really want to move over to ubuntu (or maybe even kubuntu) but aside from running vmware, I don't know how to transfer stuff to and from my ipod. If anyone can help then let me know...

Actually, kidding aside...my dev machine (anything requiring heavy lifting) is totally a blank canvas (grey desktop). My general machine is a rather loopy place. I do like bad desktop images and have an odd collection from over the years. I also use my desktop as a way to try to get comfortable to things I'm working on. Right now, I'm trying to warm up to a wordmark idea and this is what is plastered on the machine - I think it might be good enough but I'm never sure...

Yeh i would like to move to ubuntu too, you can order it on cd (for free)
from here. there is a live cd that comes with the install cd which kinda cool cause it lets you play around with ubuntu with out having to do anything but put the cd in and restart (you might have to change some cmos settings..)

unfortunatly when i tried to install it for a dual boot on a single hardrive
( :xbones: without backing up :xbones: ) i managed to wipe my whole HD :glare:
soo yeh i've kinda ben weary of it since...

(i dont want to put anyone off installing ubuntu. just make sure you backup your system might not like your settings.)

I don't have an iPod myself so I haven't tested it myself (hopefully my girlfriend's going to bring hers round this afternoon so I'll give it a go then) but there are tools for it. You mount the ipod as you would any other usb hard drive and then use one of the tools available. If you're using KDE (or you've installed the kdelibs on Gnome) you can use amarok, otherwise you can use GTKPod. I'll update this message once I've had a play this afternoon.

IIRC, under the hood is a Celeron 2.4 GHZ on an MSI mobo, a 40GB Maxtor and a 200GB Seagate HDD, either 512 or 768 meg of DDR, and what-not. It was originally a "cheapo" 2U rackmount server from TigerDirect, but I've since moved the hardward into an older case that I think used to be my first Win98 box, back when I was still teaching in the public schools. It's pretty ugly ... I drilled a bunch of holes in the front panel of the case for cooling when it had an Athlon K6/2 in it (booger used to get real hot.....)

It runs XFCE for the desktop, and is the LAN Gateway and DNS server. It downloads all my family's and company's email from our servers in a nearby city and runs its own POP server for the LAN clients to access, and of course it runs our web application and MySQL backend to keep track of our business, and our household grocery lists, and etc.....

Most other operating systems of the 'Nix variety will mount an iPod. In addition to the aforementioned amarok and gtkpod, there's MyPod and ePhod, if I'm reading things right....

My workstation is Dell w/ whopping 933MHz PIII maxed out at 512MB RAM. Actually, its sufficient for most development stuff I do. Linux optiplex 2.6.12-1-686 #1 Tue Sep 27 12:52:50 JST 2005 i686 GNU/Linux. Its debian's testing branch. Next workstation will definitely be debian stable. Fine for PHP, perl, java (little slow) and C--like I do much of that 🙂. The room is currently in version 3.0 but here are some pix:

At the time I was running lots of frequent, heavy cpu load cron jobs, which I off-loaded from my workstation onto a dedicated box---network monitoring stuff. So yeah the $4 keyboard on the floor is for the server under the desk---and its monitor is way over on top of the rack. The rack holds a Mac OS 9 audio set up w/ Digital Performer. I have the G4 for java development on OS X (its behind the keyboard).

Well, yeah; "on the far right" ... that keyboard appears to be the LH side of a midi controller or synth or something.
