read $_GET vars?

Hello!
This might be a stupid question.
Well, you know that you can read variables this way: domain.com/?cat=flash&id=8657
right?
Latelly I've seen many sites that seems (to me) that they're manipulating the variables in a different way, you know, like if you were moving though directories:
domain.com/flash/8657
or even something like
domain.com/index.php/flash/8657/#comments
I wonder if I'm getting this right, If something like this can be done, can anyone tell me how? or at least tell me how to look for it? how is it called?

any help will be really appreciated!

Yeah, I've seen that too.

I maybe wrong, but AFAIK this has much more to do with the webserver configuration than with PHP.

I really don't know how they do it, so this is clearly NOT a stupid question :rolleyes:

I have my websites on shared hosting servers, so it would be hard to get that configuration, right? :queasy: 🙁

its the mod_rewrite module for apache. you should be able to configure this on a shared server using a .htaccess file. look it up in the apache manual.

as for the # thing. this is normally used in conjunction with anchors on the client side.
