Getting last file update date from a server directory???

I am looking for a way to get the last time a specific file (an JPG file) was updated to display at the base of an HTML page.

I've looked around on this site and found...

<?php echo "Last modified: " date("F d, Y g:i:s A T.", getlastmod()); " ?>

Looked good to me. I figured I could play with it and get it to work. Problem is, for some reason, instead of giving me anything of the datetime stamp, it echos the command on the screen.

Any ideas???
