Displaying directory data.

I have a list of names that I want to display on a web page in a directory/index like format in alphabetical order. There is a function that pulls all the names from my database and puts it into an array. The alphabetizing is easy since I can just modify my SQL statement to order all results. My problem though is creating a pretty and easy to read directory/index where people can look up the list of names. Does anyone have some code or a website that demonstrates this well?

I don't really understand how you want the data displayed....do you mean...

Directory 1
[INDENT]Item 1[/INDENT]
[INDENT]Item 2[/INDENT]
Directory 2
[INDENT]another list of items[/INDENT]

and what do you mean "look up the list of names"?? Just like a regular file list you would get if you navigated to a directory that didn't have a index file?

A format like the glossary at the back of a book (parallel columns.) Instead of having a single column up/down listing, I want to have multiple columns so I can try to make the page height smaller and the information more accessible without having to scroll down and up a bunch.
