locked tables

if a table shows the status of locked, can that table be read while it is "locked"?

That really depends on the database, the version, the table handler if there's more than one, and what kind of lock it is.

thanks for your reply sxooter, i am using mysql version 4.0.25, the table type is MyISAM.

I just noticed that the table gets locked when doing an update like

UPDATE Members SET Online = 'Y', LastSession='$DateTime' WHERE MemberID = '1001'

I get about 400,000 page hits / day and its very database driven... just wondering whats going on with it.

I'm no MySQL guru, but if you've got an UPDATE statement that's not so important, you can do an 'UPDATE LOW_PRIORITY' I believe. Any guru's out there agree?
